DHA

DHA

  • DHA, short for Docosahexaenoic acid, is an omega-3 fatty acid that is considered an essential nutrient for optimal health. It is a primary structural component of the brain, eyes, and nervous system.

  • DHA is particularly important during periods of rapid growth and development, such as for infants, children, and pregnant women. DHA supports brain, eye and cardiovascular health, and has anti-inflammatory properties. Adequate DHA intake during pregnancy is associated with better cognitive outcomes in children.

  • Good dietary sources of DHA include fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel, sardines, and trout. While fatty fish is the most common and rich source of DHA, algae and some types of seaweed contain small amounts of DHA as well.

  • DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) are both omega-3 fatty acids found in fish and seafood. DHA is crucial for brain development, eye health, and overall cognitive function, while EPA is known for its anti-inflammatory properties and cardiovascular benefits. They have different molecular structures and specific roles in the body. While DHA can be converted to EPA, the conversion is limited, thus it is ideal to have a balanced intake of both DHA and EPA to support various aspects of health.

  • Ellement is one of few brands that includes both DHA and EPA in our fish-based capsule. We also offer a 100% Vegan algae-based formulation which includes DHA only.

Half of prenatal supplement brands include DHA in their products, and only a quarter include EPA, with less than 24% including both EPA and DHA. Over 40% of other prenatal brands include no DHA or EPA at all.

  • Our DHA and EPA formulations are produced by AvailOm® from Evonik, which have shown faster absorption and bioavailability than other Omega-3 formulations in human clinical trials.

  • Yes. It is possible to get too much Omega-3. While Omega-3 fatty acids are beneficial for health, excessive intake can have potential side effects (such as blood thinning or gastrointestinal discomfort) and interact with certain medications. The daily recommended upper limit (UL) for Omega-3s is 1 g.

  • Yes. Some Ellement customers who have high fish consumption in their diets, for example, prefer to have DHA and EPA removed. We can easily accommodate this adjustment.
